다음은 아마존 온라인 서점에 있는 영어 저서 중 2017-18년에 출판된 중국 기독교와 한국 기독교에 대한 연구서와 대중서를 선별한 목록이다.
1년에 중국 기독교에 대해서는 40여 권이 출판되고, 한국 기독교에 대해서는 2-4권이 출판된다. 10-20배 정도의 연구 결과가 영어로 출판된다는 뜻은 중국어와 한국어로 출판되는 저서와 상관 없이, 세계어가 된 영어로 중국 기독교가 얼마나 많이 소개되고 연구가 활발히 이루어지는지를 보여준다.
영어로 박사논문을 쓴 후 책으로 내는 한국인이 1년에 한 명도 안 된다. 수 백 명 신학생이 유학비로 1년에 한 명 당 5만 달러만 잡고, 100명으로만 잡아도 한 해에 500만 달러, 60억 원 이상을 소비하는데도, 생산은 없다. 퍼주기다.
한국 기독교는 섬처럼 고립되어 있다. 아직도 우리는 외국인이 쓴 신학 서적을 번역해서 풀어 먹는 번역신학에 머물러 있다. 그들이 만들어 놓은 프레임에서 그들의 용어로 신학을 하고 있다.
한국 신학자들은 의무적으로 평생에 최소 한 권의 영어 저서를 외국 출판사에서 출판해야 한다. 한글로 짜집기된 서적이 아니라, 영어로 내어 놓아도 읽을 거리가 있는 그런 책이 없다면, 한국 신학도, 한국 교회도 세계인의 눈에는 없다. 영어로 쓰면 개념도 분명하게 된다. 영어로 출판해야 세계 기독교인과 대화가 가능하다.
수 많은 대형교회가 있으면 뭐 하나. 영어 책 한 권 낼 수 없는 신학이라면, 그것은 국내용이요 내부용이다. 세계 교회를 위해 내어 놓을 수 있는 책이 없다면 그것은 죽은 대형교회이다.
한국 기독교 쇠퇴의 중요한 한 원인은 한글로만 된 책을 쓰고 읽고 가르치기 때문이다. 그런데 그 대부분의 책이 영어에서 번역한 책이라, 한국 목회자와 교인은 현실과 동떨어진 채 공중부양 속에 성경을 읽고 해석한다. 그게 바로 현실을 떠난 기독교요, 한국사회에서 아무런 영향력을 발휘하지 못하는 기독교요, 그 결과 한국 사회로부터 외면 받는 기독교이다. 한국 상황에 맞는 기독교라야 영어로 출판할 수 있다는 현실적 아이러니를 깊이 깨달아야 한다.
한국기독교 책의 또 하나의 문제는 현재 한국 기독교에 대한 사회학적, 신학적 연구가 적다는 것이다. 초기 1910년 이전 연구에 매달려 있다. 일제 시대를 다룬 책들과 해방 전후, 1950-90년대를 다룬 책은 물론 2000년대 이후를 다룬 책들이 많이 나와야 한다.
